The Collin County Democratic Party is horrified by the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk on a Utah college campus today. We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Kirk’s family, friends, and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. This act of political violence is an affront to our democracy and the fundamental values we hold as Americans. We firmly and unequivocally condemn it.

Our grief and condemnation extend to another community shattered by violence today. We are also heartbroken by the news of a school shooting in Colorado. Our deepest sympathies are with those victims, their families, and all those affected.

While these events may differ in their apparent motives, they are connected by a common thread: the devastating impact of gun violence. A civil society requires more than just condemning violence after it occurs; it requires us to proactively prevent it. We believe in the right to debate and disagree passionately at the ballot box, but we also believe in the fundamental right of every person to be safe in their school, on their campus, and in their community.

We reiterate our urgent call for responsible, common-sense gun safety laws. This includes measures supported by a majority of Americans, such as universal background checks and red flag laws, designed to prevent firearms from falling into the hands of those who intend to do harm, whether driven by political hatred or any other motive.

We call on all community and political leaders to join us in not only denouncing this violence but also in taking concrete steps to end our nation’s epidemic of gun violence. We must honor the lives lost with meaningful action.

In solidarity,

Collin County Democratic Party
