Democrats decry cancellation of town hall meeting
(COLLIN COUNTY) March 14, 2025 – Congressman Keith Self’s decision to cancel his “Koffee with Keith” town hall in Greenville, Texas, is a blatant dereliction of his duty to the people he was elected to serve. His claims of “vile and hateful rhetoric” and “death threats” are a thinly veiled excuse to avoid facing his constituents and answering tough questions. Let’s be clear: this is not about safety—it’s about cowardice.
Congressman Self’s assertion that he is canceling the event to protect constituents is laughable. Town halls are a fundamental part of democracy, and elected officials have a responsibility to show up, listen, and respond to the people they represent—even when it’s uncomfortable. By hiding behind vague claims of threats, Self is prioritizing his own political comfort over the democratic process.
We condemn all forms of violence and threats, and we have consistently called for peaceful, respectful dialogue. But let’s not be fooled: Self’s decision to cancel this event has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with his unwillingness to face accountability. If he truly cared about his constituents, he would have increased security measures and held the town hall as planned. Instead, he chose to run away.
This is not the first time Keith Self has dodged his constituents, and it’s becoming a pattern. He seems to believe he can hide from the people who put him in office, ignoring their concerns and avoiding tough questions. But we will not let him off the hook. The people of Texas deserve better than a representative who refuses to show up and do his job.
We demand that Congressman Self immediately reschedule this town hall and commit to engaging openly and honestly with his constituents. If he cannot handle the heat of public accountability, then he has no business holding public office.
The Collin County Democratic Party is dedicated to holding elected officials accountable and ensuring that the voices of everyday citizens are heard. We believe in the power of democracy and will not stand by while politicians like Keith Self silence their constituents.
