We here with the Collin County Democratic Party disagree with our counterparts in the Collin County Republican Party on just about everything, but at least they are not sponsoring two of the most extremist members of Congress to visit our County. That grim distinction goes to the Frisco Conservatives, which hosted Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia in Frisco on December 11, and the Collin County Conservative Republicans, which is hosting Congressman Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina later this month in McKinney. Neither of these extremists are welcome in our home county, and it speaks to how desperate for attention and relevance both these members of Congress are that they would travel so far outside their districts to attend events hosted not by the county Republican Party but by local clubs. It also speaks to how desperate these groups are for attention that they are hosting such awful people.
"Loony Lies and Conspiracy Theories"
Taylor Greene is not so much a member of Congress as a right-wing troll. She took office in January 2021, and in February was stripped of all committee assignments due to her history of trafficking in racism, anti-Muslim bigotry, anti-Semitism and baseless conspiracy theories, along with her support for online comments encouraging violence against Democratic officials including members of Congress. But don’t take it from us; earlier this year Senator Mitch McConnell condemned Greene’s "loony lies and conspiracy theories" as a "cancer for the Republican Party. Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality," McConnell said.
Madison Cawthorn is just as bad. A fervent supporter of the “Big Lie” that the 2020 Presidential election was somehow fraudulent, he spoke at the 1/6/21 “Stop the Steal” rally and recently hinted at more violence to come. At an event in North Carolina, he told supporters if elections “continue to be stolen” it will lead to “bloodshed.” Cawthorn defended 1/6 Capitol insurrectionists, calling them “political hostages” and vowing to “bust them out” of jail.
Both Cawthorn and Taylor Greene are COVID deniers and have railed on against vaccines and mask mandates. Taylor Greene has several times compared wearing a face mask to Jewish people being forced to wear a star of David by Nazis. Cawthorn in November posted a blog article titled, “Fauci is a Demon Doctor that Deserves to be Prosecuted.”
It’s impossible hard to say if these two really believe their rhetoric, or just use it to gain media attention, and therefore help them raise money. There are plenty of Americans, including Collin County residents, who revel in their meanness, callousness, and bigotry, and are happy to send them money so they can keep “owning the libs.” Both are only members of Congress because of Republican gerrymandering; we expect the majority of Georgians and North Carolinians are as embarrassed by their antics as the rest of us are. It's disappointing but not surprising that our local Republican members of Congress, Van Taylor (CD3) and Pat Fallon (CD4) have said nothing about their extremist colleagues raising money in their home districts.
The Collin County Democratic Party completely and without reservation repudiates these two members of Congress, the extremist groups that invited them to our home, and everything that both stand for. They are not welcome here, and cannot leave soon enough.
