Local Democrats call for renewed activism

COLLIN COUNTY (April 7, 2025) Reaffirming a steadfast commitment to continue raising their collective voices, expressing their shared discontentment, and peacefully conveying their resolve through active demonstrations, the Collin County Democratic Party is encouraging activism within its ranks and beyond.

“The right to protest is a cornerstone of our democracy,” says Jeremy Sutka, Chair of the Collin County Democratic Party. “It presents us with a vital mechanism through which the public can voice its frustrations, demand accountability, and compel those in power to listen.”

The Hands Off protests, held on Saturday, April 5, in which hundreds of thousands of people nationally from all walks of life gathered to show solidarity, embody this principle. The protests, including those in McKinney and Frisco, united people from different backgrounds, political affiliations, many engaged for the first time, standing together against overreach and injustice.

“This remarkable coalition should serve as a wake up call to the current administration: the people are speaking, and their collective voice cannot be ignored,” added Sutka. “Yet, tragically, I fear these calls for justice and representation will fall on deaf ears. The dismissiveness of leaders like Donald Trump and Elon Musk, coupled with the complicity of their Republican enablers, reveals a troubling disconnect between those in power and the citizens they are meant to serve.”

The kind of solidarity across differing ideologies revealed by participants in the Hands Off protests must be heeded. When the inherent power of these gatherings is ignored, or met with indifference and contempt, it exposes a failure of leadership and a betrayal of the democratic values upon which the country was founded.

“Let this be clear: We, the people, will not back down. We will not be silenced by apathy or intimidation. Our resolve is unwavering. We will continue to fight: for our rights, for accountability, and for a government that truly represents all of us, not just the privileged few,” he concluded.

The Hands Off protests, as well as those protests at congressional offices, are not an endpoint but a rallying cry. Together, the people will persist until justice is served and democracy is restored to its rightful place: in the hands of the people.
